Make hospitals cleaner says Lib Dem Councillor

12.04.29pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 3rd Sep 2007

A Lib Dem Councillor is calling for an investigation into how hospitals can be made cleaner and how the incidence of infections picked up in hospital can be reduced. Flo Clucas, who represents Allerton and Hunts Cross, has made the call in a motion to the City Council (5th September).

The motion reads:

Council notes the recent report on hospital acquired infections (HAI) and the concern of local residents with regard to it, together with the evidence from Wales that seems to show that HAIs can be reduced by management of the hospital environment - particularly in relation to cleaning.

This Council requests that the Executive Member for Health and Adult Services requests that a report be submitted to the Health and Adult Social Care Select Committee to: -

a) examine the effect demonstrated in Wales, of the reduction in hospital acquired infections by bringing hospital cleaning services in house; and

b) investigates the effect that staff travelling to and from hospitals in uniform - including staff working directly with patients - has on passing infections into hospitals and into the local community from hospitals and that such reports be done in conjunction with the hospital trusts.
