Fight dump plans say Lib Dems

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 29th May 2009

Liberal Democrat Councillors in Cressington are fighing plans by a private company to site a waste disposal plant at Garston Docks.

The scheme, dreamt up by a firm called Jack Allen Holdings, would involve a plant being built and waste deliveries by lorries.

The site is off Dock Road and right next to the Cressington Heath housing development.

Says Lib Dem Councillor Paula Keaveney: " We all know that Liverpool needs places to treat its waste. But this is completely the wrong site. It is right by people's houses and off an already busy road. What's more there is a wildlife area which could be seriously damaged if this company gets planning permission".

Now that Jack Allen Holdings have submitted the plans, there is a consultation period during which residents and others can send in objections and comments. The scheme is then likely to go to a Planning Committee for decision.

The three Liberal Democrat Councillors are sending in objections. But they are also urging local people to do the same. Says Paula: "Its vital that the committee realises the strength of feeling and the strength of the arguments against this mad idea"
